Introduction: Military service often exposes soldiers to high-stress environments and traumatic experiences, which can lead to physical and psychological disorders. The present study aimed to investigate muscle damage, combat readiness, and depression levels in soldiers following selected training and ginseng supplementation.
Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, forty soldiers aged 21 to 28 years, with a service history of 14 ± 1.7 months, were randomly selected from the military center in Tehran and they divided into four groups: supplement, training, training + supplement, and control. The training program included a combination of resistance and endurance exercises conducted for 8 weeks (3 sessions per week). The supplement groups received one 500 mg ginseng capsule daily for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
Results: The results showed that blood concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase increased (P=0.000) in the training and training + supplement groups compared with the control group. Moreover, depression levels and blood lactate were significantly decreased (P=0.001). While, there were not any significant differences in the supplement-only group (p›0.05).
Conclusion: Performing selected training combined with ginseng supplementation improves adaptation to intense physical training and reduces depression levels in soldiers.
