Introduction: Telemedicine is an important component of digital health and its successful implementation largely depends on the preparedness and competencies of future healthcare professionals. Students in medical sciences, as the future healthcare workforce, play an important role in the adoption and effective use of this technology. This study aimed to assess awareness, knowledge, attitude, and skills regarding telemedicine among students at Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2026 among 310 students at Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences. Participants were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling method. Data were collected using the Persian version of the Telemedicine Awareness, Knowledge, Attitude, and Skills questionnaire (AKAS). The content validity of the Persian version had previously been established, with a reported content validity index of 0.98. In the present sample, the reliability coefficients were 0.84 for awareness, 0.78 for knowledge, 0.87 for attitude, and 0.91 for skills. The Kuder–Richardson 20 coefficient was used for the knowledge domain, and Cronbach’s alpha was used for the other domains. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, the Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman’s rank correlation, and the chi-square test.
Results: The mean scores for awareness, knowledge, attitude, and skills were 11.86 ± 5.25, 9.62 ± 2.06, 33.32 ± 5.55, and 23.89 ± 7.57, respectively. These scores corresponded to 49.4%, 87.5%, 75.7%, and 61.3% of the maximum attainable scores, indicating low awareness, high knowledge, a favorable attitude, and moderate skills. Computer and internet literacy was significantly associated with all four domains. Previous telemedicine training and prior use of telemedicine were significantly associated with awareness, knowledge, and attitude; however, their association was not significant with the skills. Significant positive correlations were observed among all four domains with the strongest correlation between awareness and attitude (rₛ=0.437, P<0.001).
Conclusion: Students demonstrated high knowledge and favorable attitudes toward telemedicine; however, their awareness and practical skills were comparatively lower. These findings support the development and evaluation of targeted, skills-based educational programs focusing on telemedicine, digital literacy, and the practical use of remote healthcare systems.
