Introduction: Competency of human resources, especially emergency department nurses, is very important as the front line of the health system. Safety competency is an objective and sometimes subjective concept. Although competency or qualification is widely used by researchers, its dimensions have not been fully identified. This study aims to analyze the concept of safe competency with the approach of Walker and Avant for emergency nurses in critical situations.
Materials and Methods: This methodological study was conducted based on Walker and Avant's conceptual analysis model in 2019. Analysis of the concept of safe competency has been performed in eight steps by searching and analyzing studies in PubMed databases and Google Scholar search engine using competency, qualification, safety in nursing keywords without time limit until the end of 2024. Finally, 11 articles were reviewed.
Results: The results showed that the nurses’ safe competency in critical situations includes dimensions such as clinical safety, team work with other health professions, effective communication, safety risk management, environmental and human factors recognition, identification, response and reporting of near or near-miss events . It generally covers the broad issues of patient safety in health professions education.
Conclusion: This study was able to partially identify different areas of safety competency in nursing in critical situations. Identifying the exact dimensions of this concept can provide valuable insight in the design of valid tools to identify the strengths and weaknesses of nurses to improve competency and ultimately it improves the quality of care.
