Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are growing fast in different part of Iran. The present study aimed to investigate the population attributable fraction of hypertension associated with obesity in elderly population of Northwest Iran.
Method and Materials: In the present study, data on prevalence of hypertension was extracted from the surveillance system of non-commutable diseases in 2009. Measure of association between hypertension and obesity was extracted from Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. After age standardizing the prevalence data, the population attributable fraction of hypertension associated with obesity was calculated for the Northwest of Iran.
Results: The highest population attributable fraction of hypertension associated with population in elderly people observed in in East Azarbayjan men which was 8.3% (95% CI=6.1-9.8) with the prevalence of hypertension of 12.9%. In addition, in female population, the highest population attributable fraction observed in Ardabil province 7.8% (95% CI=5.8-9.2) with the prevalence of hypertension of 13.1%.
Discussion and Conclusion: More weight loss and weight control programs are needed for elderly in Northwest Iran. If a fraction of obesity can be reduced a sizable fraction of hypertension will be reduced consequentially.
