Introduction: In the health system, teamwork is important to improve the quality of services and it provides safe and effective care. The operating room as an environment with a high risk of medical errors and performing coordinated activities and careful planning of surgeries requires high levels of teamwork for safe operation. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the attitudes of operating room staff regarding teamwork skills in educational hospitals of Jahrom University of Medical Sciences.
Methods and Materials: This descriptive study was conducted in Jahrom University of Medical Sciences in 2019. The study population included 201 anesthesia and operating room nurses who were enrolled in the study by census method. The data collection tool was a 23- item questionnaire on attitude towards teamwork based on a 5-point Likert scale (from strongly disagree to strongly agree) and a demographic questionnaire. Data analysis was performed through descriptive statistics included frequency distribution, frequency percentage, mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics (t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient) using SPSS software version 16.
Results: 66.2% of the participants in the study were women and their mean age was 29.42±6.55. Based on the results, the mean total score of teamwork attitude was 91.16±8.57 in nurses. Moreover, the participants obtained approximately 80% of the total score which indicates their favorable attitude towards teamwork.
Discussion and Conclusion: The overal score of the participants’ view of teamwork skills was positive and acceptable. Considering the importance of teamwork in health care specially in operating room environment which can lead to increase work efficacy and strength of relationships, it is recommended to perform a plan and service training courses for health care personal in the environment.
