Introduction: Considering the frequency of brain injuries in emergency situations and the importance of preparing high-quality images for the correct diagnosis of abnormalities in the brain tissue, the use of these error reduction methods is of great importance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the CT scan number of different brain tissues and to investigate the effect of using different reconstruction kernels
on the CT scan number of different brain tissues.
Methods and Materials: This cross-sectional and experimental study was conducted on 67 patients CT scan brain image. This study was conducted to determine the CT number of white matter, gray matter of the brain, cerebrospinal fluid and skull bone in soft tissue reconstruction kernels (H31s) and sharp kernels (sharp 70s).
Results: In the reconstruction of the image using a sharp kernel, the CT numbers in the gray matter of the brain, white matter of the brain, cerebrospinal fluid and skull bone had an increasing trend, which were 39.15, 33.01, 9.41 and 1091.2, respectively. However, the tissue kernel soft was 36.7, 32.66, 9.25 and 1080.77 respectively. The average CT number in the gray matter of the brain increased significantly in the sharp kernel. There is also an increase in the white matter of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid; however, it was not statistically significant. In the skull bone, the CT number increased in the sharp kernel and this difference was not significant.
Discussion and Conclusion: In this study, both reconstruction kernels can be used to determine the CT number of the gray matter of the brain, skull bone, white matter of the brain, and cerebrospinal fluid. Moreover, different kernels do not have any effect on the CT scan number of different brain tissues. It is suggested that in future studies, the CT scan number of the gray matter of the brain should be checked with higher measurement accuracy, it should be evaluated and compared in other tissues as well, and the changes in its amount should be interpreted based on the determined body tissues and the imaging results.
