Introduction: Rapid urban development and the expansion of industrial activities in recent years have led to a significant increase in ambient particulate matter concentrations. This study aimed to determine pollution levels and assess the health risks associated with PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ in the industrial zone of Bandar Abbas.
Materials and Methods: To monitor air quality, sampling was conducted at 42 stations within the study area. Particulate matter concentrations were measured based on standard methods. Moreover, the health risks associated with exposure to PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ were calculated for two population groups of adults and children.
Results: The average annual PM₁₀ concentration was estimated at 72.86 μg/m³, and the average annual PM₂.₅ concentration was 35.68 μg/m³.Values which considerably higher than the annual limits recommended by the World Health Organization. The results indicated that there was not any statistically significant difference between seasonal mean concentrations in summer and winter. Health risk analysis showed that PM₁₀ contributed the most total risk in adults; whereas, PM₂.₅ was identified as the more influential and hazardous pollutant for children.
Conclusion: According to the findings, particulate matter pollution in the industrial area of Bandar Abbas represents a serious environmental and public health concern. Continuous and effective air pollution control strategies targeting industrial emissions in this region are urgently required.
